Afrika Typografika 3

Our class is currently working on something for Garth Walker's (Mister Walker Design) Afrika Typografika #3. We have to develop an African inspired font and create a single page spread to go into the magazine. After scrapping a few different concepts, I decided to get away from the cultural side of Africa and focus on the industrial side of Durban - it's port. I was under the impression that we had to communicate our concept in a formal typeface, but after speaking to Mr. Walker I quickly realised that he was looking for a more photographic approach. After a few trips around container depots and the harbor (which I couldn't get into) I was able to snap some shots that I could use for my typeface. Here's a couple examples of how I used the photos to create the typeface :

I can't display my final spread yet as it might get published and I don't have the distribution rights, but I'll update this post with the final spread as soon as I'm allowed to!

The Journey of the Travelling Hoodie

Hey everyone! I've been hard at work on a couple projects, one of which is a hoodie design competition for Hang Ten. The competition details have been given out to various institutions around South Africa, so there should be a range of fantastic deigns being produced by students around the entire country. Hang Ten have given us a plain white hoodie to work with and working in pairs, we have to create a design for the hoodie.  The theme for the competition is "The Journey of the Travelling Hoodie", so we had to create a design that communicates the idea of a journey. I'll be working with Megan Anne Hodge, a fellow student. Here's just a few pictures of our brainstorming and sketches :

We are going to be drawing inspiration from our surroundings and using elements from Durban/South Africa to make up the various parts of our hoodie. Our concept is to try and create a template of sorts, encouraging the consumer who is going to wear the hoodie to try and personalise it and fill it with there own experiences. We'll probably be using formal typography and elements of varying scale to try and create an interesting layout.

Well, that's all for now - I'll try update you on this project and get around to posting about one of our other on-going projects for iJusi Magazine. Cheers!

Anti-Design : 1 Minute Movie Campaign

Hi all. Just going to make a quick post about our first project that we completed before I created my blog. Our brief was to create a one minute movie about anti design and then create packaging for the disc, a simple point of sale display and a viral campaign. My group developed the concept of using popular and iconic figures or objects and using the words "This is not..." to communicate the anti-design philosophy.

The video will be posted on Youtube shortly, but here's some pictures of the campaign:

First Update!

Hey everyone! This is my first post on my new blog - I've been meaning to set up a little blog for a while now but have been way too busy and thought it would be too much of a mission. Not that that has changed, but now my class is getting pushed into getting one up-and-running, which will be beneficial for us in the end, I guess.

I was actually surprised at how customizable the blog layout is on blogspot.com - I always thought you would be limited to changing basic settings like backgrounds/headers/basic layout settings etc.  I have a little background knowledge of html/css so I'm going to have fun constantly editing and changing things! Anyways, back to work - I've got a couple uni projects going on at the moment which I'll post about as soon as I have some time. Monday Complete!
